Although basins with vanity units make for a stylish choice and will add a modern look to any bathroom, they have quite a bit of history.

We traced their origins to centuries ago, to the old design of Chinese washbasins (you know, in the days before running water). Centuries later, they are making a comeback and here’s why we love them:

They are a great storage solution as the cupboards below can store away all sorts of clutter, including unsightly cleaning products.

Vessel sinks come in a variety of makes and models, constructed of high quality and durable materials such as cast iron for a traditional look, glass and natural stone such as marble, for a more modernized bathroom and elegant ceramics. You can even find sinks made of stainless steel and bronze.

Design tip:

A bronze sink, glass mosaic tile backsplash, and bathroom accessories, will add depth to a neutral bathroom granite countertop.

Design tip:

The bathroom vessel sink is likely to draw more attention than the countertop it sits on so it’s best to add a contrasting color for the countertop.

What to keep in mind when installing a vessel sink in your bathroom

Vessel sinks are raised above the level of the countertop, so a special faucet with a long neck will be required to accommodate the size of the sink.

1. Take into consideration a wall-mount faucet for your bathroom vessel sink.

2. Consider a lower counter height to accommodate your sink if it sits on top of the counter.

Vessel sinks differ from the traditional bathroom sink which sits comfortably within the vanity counter top, usually 32 to 36 inches above the floor–a comfortable height for brushing teeth and washing hands, according to Kohler.
