With summer fast approaching, we are all ready to spend ample time outside. One of the best ways to relax or entertain guests is in a comfortable patio space. With your patio transformed into a relaxing oasis, you won’t want to leave. But what if your patio space is on the small side?
Not to worry—it’s still possible to turn your small outdoor patio into a cozy retreat! All it takes is a little creativity, some out-of-the-box thinking, and a desire to turn your small patio space into a summer getaway.
To help you begin your remodeling journey, here are some small patio decorating ideas to inspire your outdoor space.
Chances are, if you have a small patio, your neighbors are fairly close. Create a privacy screen that doubles as a stunning decoration! You can choose among a variety of options to achieve this. You can use a wall of plants to create a living privacy screen, while also bringing a touch of nature to your space. Or, if you aren’t a fan of the large plant option, hang some neutral curtains around the edges.
Whether you want to relax in the evening with a book or prefer entertaining friends, you will want a quality light source to create an inviting atmosphere. A few wonderful options are strings of large outdoor lights or an electric fireplace (s’mores anyone?). You could even combine the two for an extra cozy atmosphere.
Forget those bulky, prepacked patio sets. Design a space that is uniquely you when choosing your seating. Depending on your goal, you may want seating that moves (such as a porch swing or hammock), or stationary seating (such as a bench or chairs). Whichever you choose, spice up the area with throw blankets and pillows to create a calming and relaxing environment.
Find a Tiny Table
When space is at a premium, a fun and colorful tiny side table is your best partner for holding your morning coffee, a favorite book, or a soothing candle. You can find a variety of beautiful side tables ready-made at stores. Or, if you love DIY projects, consider building your own.
If you choose the DIY route, you can either build a tiny table from scratch or repurpose and refinish a different piece. For a truly show-stopping tiny table, consider adding an inlay of mosaic tiles from Granite and TREND Transformations. With countless colors and styles, you can easily find mosaic tiles perfectly suited to your unique style.
Functional Furniture

This fun and functional table planter is a unique way to add a touch of nature to your small outdoor patio. It’s not only the perfect resting spot for a refreshing beverage but it’s sure to be a conversation starter. You can also plant herbs in the table – such as basil, thyme or mint – making them easy to reach for your iced tea or while cooking your next meal.
Pergola with Farm Table
Keep yourself and your guests shaded from the harsh summer sun by adding a pergola. A pergola lined with wisteria is the perfect way to shade your patio area. Add a farm table and some wicker chairs for a natural vibe. When combined with a string of lights or hanging lanterns, you can instantly transform your small patio into a warm and inviting space.
