Having a small kitchen doesn’t mean you’re limited on design ideas; in fact, this lends itself to expanding creativity for making it the perfect space for your individual taste.
Here are some design ideas for how you can transform your small kitchen into your dream space, with a perfect mix of beauty and functionality:
Function Over Form
Since meal preparation is the main function of the kitchen, make the best of your small space by focusing on ways to make it work best for you. Assign other areas of your home for homework, office duties and other household chores – thus making way for a more stress-free and functional kitchen. Experts say to focus on the right appliances and workspace to allow for a free-flowing kitchen. Scaled-down or innovative appliances, pint-sized microwaves, small two-burner stoves and single sinks are some ways to capitalize on your limited space.
Combine Materials
Small kitchens may lack architectural detail and appear boring if you don’t leverage interesting, eye-catching materials. Combining a creative mixture of cabinetry, countertop surfaces, fixtures, flooring, lighting and color can add a new dimension and excitement to your kitchen. It might be helpful to compile a board of samples and swatches of the materials you are considering to help you achieve a more cohesive look. The kitchen below features an entire wall of Brooklyn traditional mosaic tiles from Granite Transformations which add variety and draw the eye upward, making the space feel larger.
Glass
Incorporating glass is one of the easiest ways to make your kitchen appear larger. Installing glass cabinet doors, glass countertops, tabletops or even kitchen doors are great ways to visually expand your kitchen. Granite Transformations offers a broad range of recycled glass countertop colors and styles that can help your kitchen feel expansive, and exude luxury and class. The kitchen below features Black Star recycled glass countertops.
Creative Flooring
Human nature draws the eye down when one walks into a room, so it’s no surprise when experts suggest thinking outside the box when it comes to your kitchen flooring. Investing in a unique pattern, design or color will add a “wow” factor to the room and detract from the size. Some homeowners opt for installing a more expensive floor (since the cost will be more affordable due to smaller square footage). Granite Transformations can install stone or mosaic tile flooring to add a “wow” factor to your space.

When it comes to spicing up a home’s décor, homeowners are using accent colors to do the trick. Experts agree that accent colors are the perfect accessory to liven up a room without going overboard with too much of a good thing.
Kitchens and baths are often neglected when it comes to using creative color. This is in part due to the innate functionality of these spaces. Here are some tips and suggestions to make your kitchen and baths stand out through the use of accent colors:
Use the Color Wheel: This is the best place to start when choosing the perfect accent color scheme for your space.
Complementary Color Scheme – Complementary colors are across from each other on a color wheel. This color combination reflects a more formal feel with separation of colors. Some examples are red and green, blue and yellow, or purple and orange.
Analogous Color Scheme – Analogous colors are next to each other on a color wheel. An analogous color combination is more casual and reflects a more restful atmosphere. Some examples are yellow and green, blue and violet, or red and orange.
Here, the bathroom is decorated in an analogous color scheme using violet as the main color, and accented with a Liberty mosaic tile wall in darker violet tones.
Use Three Colors: The 70/20/10 Rule: This rule of three is as easy as choosing one neutral color, one rich color, and one accent color. To make this work, use the lightest color for 70 percent of the room’s décor, the second lightest for 20 percent, and the boldest for 10 percent. These create a design scheme that’s well-rounded in color.
In the bathroom pictured below, Carrara quartz walls line the interior of the shower and vanity with neutral gray walls that lay the foundation of the room as the 70% backdrop. Dark Italian Walnut cabinets and mirror frame represent the rich color serve as 20%. Finally, a touch of brightly colored hand towels with coordinating artwork are the 10% that ties the room together to create a cohesive design.
Back in Black: Experts agree that incorporating black will enhance all of the other colors in a room. The retro-themed kitchen featured below uses bold, custom floral mosaic tile wallpaper that extends the height of the wall, with white shaker-style cabinetry on either side of the hood. The black cabinets create a dramatic look while keeping the room classic and interesting.
Neutrals: Neutrals can also be used as accent colors. Using varying shades of a neutral color can reflect a sophisticated and classic look without being dull. Here, a striking coffee-colored mosaic tile mix shower wall lends visual impact to the room while a coordinating bath mat and towels pull the room together.

With spring right around the corner, now is a great time to think about sprucing up your home. What better place to turn to than Pinterest for some easy and budget-friendly ideas to give your rooms a lift?
Since the home’s kitchen and bathrooms see the most traffic, we thought it would be fun to share some easy design ideas from Pinterest that can be completed in a short weekend, or even in one day. Granite Transformations is the one to turn to for a beautiful bathroom or kitchen makeover, as installation can be done in as little as one day with no demolition and less mess.
Pretty Powder Room
Create a pretty powder room with a floral mosaic wallpaper feature wall in your favorite dual tone. Paint the other walls in a complementary color for a gorgeous retreat that you and your guests will love.
Marble-Inspired Accents
For centuries, marble has been a symbol of wealth and prestige. Today, it is attracting the attention of homeowners as they choose to add touches of the precious stone to their kitchens, which brings an affordable look of elegance and luxury to their homes. Featured in the photo of the kitchen below is Carrara. This is a new quartz color by Granite Transformations, from the Trascenda Collection (and appropriately named because it is reminiscent of Carrara marble).
Bottle it Up
This is by far the easiest yet cleverest way to add a touch of class to your bathroom vanity. Fill a beautiful cut crystal decanter with your favorite mouth wash. It’s a fun way to add color and practicality to your bathroom décor.
These days, artwork and favorite photos are showing up in unlikely places throughout homes. Here, perfectly placed shelving allows for extra space to store towels and accessories, and also doubles as a place to showcase personal photos. It’s a great way to add a personal touch to your guest bathroom while showing off your favorite artwork or photography.
Free up counterspace and eliminate bulky canister sets by hanging mason jars under your cabinets. This clever idea starts with attaching the lids to the underside of your cabinets, filling the jars with dried goods, and then screwing the jars back onto the lids. It’s an inexpensive and spacesaving solution to keep what you need within arm’s reach while adding a touch of character to your kitchen.
This is an easy and inexpensive way to update any space in your home while experimenting with a different color or material in your design scheme. Switching your hardware is a great starting point before investing in expensive accessories (like a gold-toned faucet, for example). Just remember: if you’re going from knobs to pulls, there will be extra drilling involved. This is nevertheless still an easy project that can be completed in one weekend.
Things are Looking Up
Painting your kitchen ceiling is an easy and unique way to add depth and warmth to this particular room while also creating a fresh new look. Choose a color that is part of your kitchen décor. If you have a smaller kitchen, go a few shades lighter to create a sense of height and openness. For larger kitchens, apply a darker shade to create a cozy and alluring look.

Tapping into your personal style of home décor can be an exciting endeavor. Granite Transformations makes the process seamless by helping you coordinate the perfect combination of cabinets, countertop and backsplash to create the beautiful space you’ve always dreamed of.
This month, we are featuring coastal design styles that showcase the perfect combination of products from Granite Transformations to reveal a coastal design style that will make you feel like you’re on the beach 24/7.
Coastal Style
American Coastal Style is derived from a palette that is drawn from the beach, sand, shells and sky. Light, breezy, openness and a carefree atmosphere are the feelings that coastal spaces should evoke. Wood colors should remain light and weathered, like the blonde maple and bisque cabinets featured in the images below. You can bring natural warmth and texture with wicker furniture, touches of rope, sea grass or nautical ball pulls to round out your coastal design. Furniture should have an air of casual, weathered sturdiness.

The collection of colors and textures are reminiscent of the beach and oceanfront living. This is achieved through the use of deep, calming blues (the colors of the ocean and sky), sandy browns, “Mother of Pearl” shell (found in our gorgeous Metropolis Pearl mosaic tiles) and light maple that all come together to create a soothing atmosphere of relaxed sophistication. Our mosaic tile mixes, coffee mix with deep and light browns and charming mix of deep blues perfectly capture the essence of the sand and sea.

Iconic coastal colors are reminiscent of coral, and shells you find when scouring the beach or the bright white tops of waves as they hit the shoreline. The Flourishing 1 mosaic tile wallpaper pictured in Coastal Bathroom: Look #1 above pervades a beachy vibe of the sun and creatures from the sea. Coastal finishes are often matte (with a chalky spin), as opposed to shiny and shimmery. Layered colors of beige, khaki and cream evoke feelings of shifting dunes, which are perfect for bathrooms. Purity and simplicity are the key for creating coastal color schemes.
