Guest Post: Does your paint cause tears of joy?

Monday, January 9th, 2012

The gallery customer picked up the jewelry box, turning it in her hands.

“So, you’ll inlay any Lapis Lazuli initials in the oak?”

“Well”, I said, ”I’ll paint it in faux Lapis.”

She had bit of a distant look on her face.

“So the price is for faux Lapis?” –running her fingers over the design on the box– “How much to do it like this?”

“I’ll be doing it just like that, in any initials you choose.”

The distance turned to confusion. Fostering my own confused look, it started to dawn on me that we had a communication problem.

Oak-Laps Box X2

“But I want real Lapis, like this.”

This is the ultimate compliment for the Trompe L’Oeil (French for ‘to fool the eye’) artist. Absolute conviction that your work is “real,” not painted.

Long story short, I managed to clarify that the entire surface was faux paint: The Lapis Lazuli and the Oak.

Thankfully, I never really get used to this. It’s always a thrill.

Like the guy at the antique car show who kept finding ways to ask me how the “wood” dash board was finished.

“So…you painted the wood? Don’t you mean stained it? Did you carve it or did you have someone else do it?”

“It’s not carved? How did you shape the wood…?”

After a few minutes of this back and forth, I took a key out of my pocket and tapped it on the dash. It rang out like the early American Detroit steel that it is.

He turned a little red, grinned and yelled: “How the hell did you do that!?” He claimed to be an experienced woodworker.

48 Dogde Interior

It’s fascinating to me that people often react more strongly to convincing Trompe L’Oeil work than they do to the real thing. Like the jewelry box customer whose attitude went from a blasé “this lapis” to “Oh my God! It’s paint!”

It’s a kind of magic and (sappy or not) the power of magic is enduring because it gives people a wonderful combination of hope and surprise.

My interior projects typically go through a similar process. The customer comes home from work to freshly installed faux crown molding, flooring inlay or wood grained cabinet doors. The reactions vary, but not much.

One lady started crying. I don’t mean damp eyes; I’m saying she was sobbing. And smiling. I assured her everything would be okay and should we proceed with that fireplace mantel she’d mentioned.

But that’s only the jumping off point. The real fun begins when they get to mess with friends and family: “Well, yes Walnut is very expensive but I just had to have it for these French doors (giggle).”

Eventually they share the truth (or not) and in this way, for as long as they’re in the home, own the car…, they get to be the magician.

Thanks to advancements in painting techniques and materials, you can make amazing painted wood grain part of your interior design project and no one will be the wiser. But please, after they’re sufficiently impressed, let them in on the secret.

Make Your Entry Door the Focal Point of Your Home

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Front Doors

The exterior door of your home is the perfect focal point for the front of your house, particularly if you pay close attention to the design, materials of the door and the accessories you place near it. By creating a beautiful front door, you’re not only making your house aesthetically appealing, but you are also giving passers-by and guests an introduction to your taste and style.

Materials

Exterior doors come, on average, in two choices of material: steel and wood. Steel doors are perhaps the most readily available and cost effective. Wood doors can lend a traditional, classic look to your home if stained in a rich color.

Whether or not you choose an entry door with glass panes or windows is simply a matter of personal taste. Windows in your front door can add visual appeal as well as allowing light to enter your home, a great choice if you have few windows in your front room or foyer.

Color

If you like bold color, the front door offers you a great opportunity to add a splash of color to your home. You obviously don’t want to paint your house bright violet but why not use it for your front door? If you live in the city or in a section of row houses, painting your front door a vivid color is a great way to make your house stand out from the rest.

If subtlety is more your style, paint your front door in a pretty pastel. Light greens and yellows look lovely on an entry door and are nicely understated. Consider colored stain for a wood door and give it a coat of polyurethane to protect it from the elements.

Accessories

You can decorate your door with beautiful wreaths and greenery, doorknockers, and even mail slots. Wreaths are a great accessory as they can be changed with the approaching season. Hang a grapevine wreath to welcome fall, a poinsettia wreath for winter and change to a dried flower wreath in the spring.

Installing planters, benches and/or wall hangings alongside your front door will make it eye-catching. Planters are as easy to change with the seasons as wreaths and offer a plethora of decorating opportunities.

Another look that we love: bold house numbers installed on the entry door. If you have a front door with a flat panel, use it for big, bold house numbers. Paint them in a contrasting color to make them stand out and add ‘No.’ before them for a touch of creativity.

If you have steps leading to your front door or porch, use them to your advantage. Planters going up the steps or situated at the base of the steps welcome guests to your home in an inviting way. Pumpkins and corn stalks in the fall look gorgeous when lined up on your porch steps.

No matter your style, get creative with your front door. It’s often the first place that people are drawn to when looking at your home. Whether it’s a bright splash of color, a more subtle tone, great accessories or a combination of decorating ideas, giving attention to your entry door will make your home stand out from the others on the block.

There’s always a couple houses in each neighborhood that spare no expense when it comes to decorating their homes for Halloween. We’re talking smoke machines, strobe lights, animatronic witches and mummies (I’ve seen it all), and on down. But does it really take dropping a couple thou at Party City to show the neighbors you mean (spooky) business. Step it up with some good old fashioned creativity.

A Little Bit of Alice in Wonderland

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Sometimes we have to sit back and remember that when people remodel they want the finished product to reflect their own interests, their own personality. The design, or re-design, of a home is something that takes creativity and imagination. Building a kitchen or bathroom should be something that is enjoyable, something that brings the owner great joy beyond the functional benefit. This is why when we see something of creative integrity, rife with originality, we want to commend it. In this case the design is less than functional, so to speak, but eye catching regardless.

Surreal.

World Class Homes: The 2010 World Cup Edition

Some call it the greatest sporting event in the world. Some plan their lives around the soaring highs and devastating lows that each national team can deliver to their frothing fan base. I’m talking about the World Cup, and right now, just a short skip across the pond, the finest soccer players in the world are lacing up their cleats in South Africa to claim glory for their nation and bring home the coveted cup. What does this have to do with granite countertops and home remodeling, you might ask? Well, truth be told, not much! What it does allow us to do, however, is take the time to examine some of the exquisite homes that the world’s soccer stars live in when they’re not sprinting from one end of the field to another for 90 minutes. People love this stuff!
