So if you read the Granite Transformations blog you probably know that we offer glass countertops, though many people don’t exactly know what that entails. We are familiar with standard stone-based options like granite, marble, silestone, and soapstone. The idea of glass countertops is intriguing – a shiny, smooth surface that can come in a wide array of colors, perhaps a wider array than than can be found within a stone-based inventory. Is it durable? Yes! Let us explain the process.

Glass countertops add an elegant element to your kitchen.
If budget cuts at home mean you had to forego the fancy wine cooler, but you still need a place to stash your bottle collection, look no further than the kitchen counter. Industrious DIY-ers aimed at creating eco-friendly home furnishings have been making their own recycled glass countertops for years now by mixing crushed wine bottles with a concrete base. Luckily, for those of us who consider popping a cork to be more than enough work for one day, commercial vendors have caught on to the recycled glass trend.
Recycled glass countertops are made using up to 72 percent recycled materials, allowing you to feel good about helping the environment while giving your old countertop a much needed upgrade. The same properties that make glass tough enough to last more than 4,000 years in a landfill are what make it strong and durable in your home. Today, glass from building demolition, windshields, traffic lights and pickle jars all find a second life as recycled countertops.

This could be you...after the holidays?
The time is almost here. The days we must entertain and impress our loved ones for Christmas, unless you plan on travelling to someone else’s house this upcoming holiday weekend. It’s never an easy task, what with making sure the food is prepared, the house is clean, the children aren’t tampering with the gifts under the tree until the morning of Christmas. This time of the year also acts as a real litmus test for you and the current complextion of your home.
How do your countertops stack up? Are the linoleum finishes beginning to wear? Could new granite countertops perhaps be in the cards after the holidays? Perhaps some new mosaic shower walls to wash away the grimy tile you currently have? When people come and see what you’re packing from a domestic perspective the weakness become that much more glaring.

Remember when you decided to uncork that bottle of Shiraz to celebrate your birthday last year? Well, it’s part of your countertop this year. Now, I’m not sure that you celebrated your birthday in such a fashion, or if you like Shiraz, or if you even enjoy beverages originally housed in glass bottles, but one thing is certain – whatever glass bottle gets drank over the course of time will inevitably lead a long and prosperous life as a post-consumer, re-propagated product. So just think, when you’re uncorking a new bottle of wine on your new glass composite countertop – you know, the scratch resistant, un-dentable one – you can rest assured that you’re getting a big fat figurative pat on the back from Mother Nature.
