6 Child Safety points around the house

Monday, January 30th, 2012

child safety

Have you ever considered how many areas around your home might be dangerous to your children?  As a parent, child safety is likely one of your top concerns.  Check around your home for the following safety points, so you can make sure that your child is safe and secure:

1.  Sharp corners on furniture

Coffee tables, chair corners and even the arm rests on your sofa can all have sharp points that could cause serious injury in the event of a fall.  If you only have one or two pieces of furniture like this, you could simply replace these with more child-friendly pieces.  Otherwise, you can child-proof them with “bumpers” that are available at most stores that sell child-proofing equipment.

2.  Toilets

Children are endlessly curious about the toilet, especially those who are beginning to toilet train.  Where does that water go, anyway?  You can protect your child — and help keep the bathroom more sanitary — by installing a toilet lock.

3.  Electrical outlets

Electrical outlets are full of possibilities, as far as children are concerned.  So many small items can fit in there.  Protect your child from shocks or worse by using plastic plugs to cover up outlets that aren’t currently in use.

4.  Pools and hot tubs

An outdoor pool or hot tub can go from summertime fun to tragedy in just the blink of an eye.  One of the most important child safety measures you can take is to install a barrier around the pool, like a mesh pool fence.  Never leave your child unsupervised around water.

5.  Burners on the stove

When you are cooking, keep children out of the kitchen.  If they want to help with meal prep, set them up with small jobs at the kitchen table so the stove is out of reach.  Always be careful to turn off the stove when you aren’t using it, and turn pot handles in so you can’t accidentally bump them and knock them over.

6. Flat screen TVs

These tend to be top heavy, and it’s easy for a child to pull one down.  This could potentially kill a small child, and reports of these types of incidents are increasing.  Install child safety straps on your TV to keep it attached to the TV stand, or, better yet, install it on the wall where it is safely out of reach.

Small Space Solutions – Easily Make a Room Feel Larger

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

living room wall muralSmall space? Don’t sweat it! You can easily open up a small space and create the illusion of more room by using any of these clever decorating tricks.

1. Mirror mirror on the wall. If your small room has windows on only one wall, you can double the amount of light and make the room appear larger by hanging a mirror on the opposite wall. Using a large mirror will make it a decorative focal point while maximizing the light and space effects at the same time. If your room lacks a window, you can create a similar effect by placing a lamp in front of a mirror. More tips on how to use mirrors to increase space here.

2. Let there be light. When choosing a paint color, remember that dark colors tend to make spaces appear smaller, while lighter colors create an expansive feeling. If you have your heart set on a dark color, consider going a few shades lighter. Or you can paint one wall in a bold accent color which will make it appear recessed, thus opening up your space.

3. Clear up kitchen counter space. Create a tasteful display of cookbooks, small appliances and dishes above your kitchen cupboards. Hang a line of hooks close to the ceiling or a pot rack to display and organize those space-hogging pots and pans. Keep keys, change, and cellphones in a decorative dish.

4. Don’t over do it. One of the main reasons small spaces feel cramped is too much furniture. Take a look at your furnishings and make sure they are in good proportion to the room size. Switching out a large coffee table for a smaller multipurpose ottoman, for example, is a little change that can make a big impact and free up space.

5. Create a room with a view. Choose a wall mural of a mountainous landscape, a field of flowers, or a skyline of your favorite city. Choose an image that appeals to your color and design aesthetic and use it not only as a stunning focal point, but as an effective way to open up your small space.

6. Raise up your bed. You can free up floor space and add more storage space to a small bedroom all at the same time by using plastic bed risers. Easily conceal your under the bed storage space with a stylish bed skirt or dust ruffle.

7. De-clutter. Nothing makes a room feel more cramped and small than too much clutter. Organize and store your dvds, chargers, remotes, magazines and papers. Remember you can only read or watch one thing at a time. Store away and file the rest. Your small space will feel much more livable with less “stuff” lying around.

Use these handy tips to make a big impact on your small space. Remember, just because a space is small, doesn’t mean it can’t be absolutely magnificent!

How To Bargain Shop For Luxurious Home Furnishings

Eames Chair

The cost of luxurious home furnishings can be expensive, and sometimes, down-right outrageous.  The problem is, you really want that couch or those paintings and lamps to accent your current living room.  The question is, how do you get them without blowing your budget out of the wallet, or landing yourself in debt?  Simply follow these great tips on how to bargain shop for luxurious home furnishings and you will be able to purchase the home furnishings of your dreams, while still staying within your budget.

#1 – Check Out Offers Online

Many luxurious home furnishing stores offer discounts for purchasing online or special offers that are only available online.  However, choosing home furnishings can be difficult just by looking at them.  In some cases, you want to feel the fabric, or see the colors with your own eyes.  To solve this problem, you can check out the store, if possible, and then purchase the items online to receive the bargains for luxurious home furnishings.

#2 – Sign Up For E-Newsletters

Most companies will offer you a free subscription to their email version of their newsletter.  This will give you advanced insight of upcoming specials, promotions and bargains on luxurious home furnishings.  In particular, keep your eyes open for after holiday sales, semi-annual sales and early bird sales, all of which will offer great bargains for the luxurious home furnishings you dream of.

#3 – After Holiday Sales

As with most department stores, the sales after the holidays, such as Christmas and Easter, are often better than during the holidays.  You can find bargains on luxurious home furnishings by shopping after the holidays at some of the more expensive home stores.  In many situations, companies stock up prior to the holidays and now need to get rid of the extra stock in order to make room for items just coming out.

#4 – Attend Semi-Annual Sales

There are several luxurious home furnishing companies that will over special sales throughout the year, known as semi-annual sales, where their prices are lower than the rest of the year.  Again, similar to after holiday sales, companies hold semi-annual sales to reduce their stock on last season’s items, which although are still in style, they need room for this season’s items.

#5 – Early Bird Sales

Watch for early bird sales, where you need to be there earlier than normal store hours to receive bargains on luxurious home furnishings.  Stores provide these types of sales to have more customers in the store at a particular time.  So remember, with early bird sales, the store may be a little more crowded, but you can still find terrific bargains on luxurious home furnishings.

#6 – Last Season’s Furnishings

As with anything else, what was on-trend last year will be different this year.  However, you can still find some great pieces of furniture and home décor items from last season that are often sold for reduced prices to make room for this season’s new items.  Remember, purchasing a couch from last season does not make it outdated – it is just not the newest item on the market.

How To Prepare Your Home For Winter

Friday, January 6th, 2012

snowstorm

Preparing your home for winter can mean the difference between staying warm and being cold. Some weatherization procedures can also help you save money on heating bills or prevent damage to your home.

Ideally, you should start winterizing your home in the fall, but procrastinators can also utilize some of the following tips even after the snow starts to fly.

1. Check and Service Your Heating Source

Whether you heat with fossil fuels or wood, servicing your heating source before using it each year is imperative. Unserviced furnaces, boilers, and wood stoves may not just be inefficient, but they can also be dangerous. If you have a furnace or boiler, call a heating and air conditioning expert to look at it. Clean out your wood stove or fireplace, as well as all chimneys, to help prevent fires and carbon monoxide leaks.

2. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be installed on each level of your home, as well as near every bedroom. Once they are installed, they should also be checked every month to ensure that they are working properly.

3. Install a Programmable Thermostat

Programmable thermostats can help you shave a decent chunk of money off of your heating bill each winter. These types of thermostats can be programmed to automatically lower the temperature in your home while you are away and turn it up again right before you come home.

4. Reverse Ceiling Fans

During the winter months, you should flip the switch on your ceiling fan to reverse the direction of the fan blades. When the blades spin clockwise, the warm air that has risen to the ceiling is pushed downward. Since the room will feel warmer, you won’t need to turn up your thermostat.

5. Winterize Windows and Doors

Most chilly drafts will enter your home through cracks and spaces around your windows and doors. Replace any cracked windows, and apply weather stripping and caulk around all of your doors and windows. You might also want to put plastic over your windows for added protection from cold winter air.

6. Move Furniture

Rearranging your furniture can help maximize your heating system’s efficiency. If your furniture is positioned in front of baseboard heaters or over floor vents, try to arrange it so that it’s not blocking the heat. If you use a wood stove or fireplace for heat, arrange the furniture in front of it for a warm and cozy winter seating area.

7. Insulate the Attic

Since heat rises, much of the warm air in your home could be escaping out of your home through your attic, especially if it isn’t insulated well. Laying down bats of insulation between the rafters in your attic can help keep your home warmer, lower your heating bills, and prevent dangerous sheets of ice from building up on your roof.

8. Protect Pipes

At the very least, frozen water in your pipes can result in no running water for your household. Most likely, though, since water expands when it freezes, it will cause your pipes to burst, which can be costly and damaging. Pipe insulation tubes or pipe insulation tape can be placed around your pipes to prevent this.

9. Clean the Gutters

Dirt and leaves that clog your gutters and downspouts will typically cause water to collect in them and freeze. Frozen water in your gutters can cause them to crack or break away from the house and fall. Be sure to remove gutter debris, and flush your gutters and downspouts with a garden hose before winter hits.

10. Prune and Trim

Gardening experts recommend pruning and trimming your shrubs and trees while they are dormant, or not actively growing. Most plants usually enter their dormant phase during the late fall or winter. Pruning your trees away from your house also lessens the chance that animals like squirrels and chipmunks will enter your home looking for shelter from the harsh winter weather.

11. Get Snow Removal Tools Ready

Keep snow shovels close at hand, and place a bag of rock salt next to your front door. Service any motorized snow removal equipment, like snow blowers, four-wheelers, and plows.

12. Prepare For Emergencies

Stock up on emergency supplies – just in case. Some things that you should include in your emergency supply kit include gallons of water, non-perishable food, candles, lanterns, and extra blankets.

Choosing Sustainable Wood

Birch trees can reach maturity up to twice as fast as oak. As you can harvest birch more often than oak you can get twice as much material for use as flooring from it in within the same timeframe.

In the 1990’s we all experienced the rise of the furniture warehouse store and many of us fell prey to the charms of what seemed like incredibly cheap furniture.

However, what a lot of the furniture gained in price it lost in quality and now more and more people are turning back to purchasing high quality, well made furniture.

One of the reasons why this is happening is because everyone is more aware of issues such as the damage that the production of cheap furniture causes to the environment and the need to take materials like wood from sustainable sources.

So what types of wood are the most sustainable and the most environmentally friendly to use?

Fast Growing Wood

Birch trees can reach maturity up to twice as fast as oak. As you can harvest birch more often than oak you can get twice as much material for use as flooring from it in within the same timeframe.

Cherry trees also grow fairly fast but the red hue of the wood tends to fall in and out of fashion which makes it a less popular choice.

Bamboo has been considered one of the most environmentally friendly woods to use for the last decade because it grows very fast and if treated correctly is very durable and long lasting.

One wood which has become more popular in recent years is mango. Mango trees can bear fruit for several decades, but once a tree grows higher than eighty feet it becomes difficult to harvest. At that point mango farmers can cut the tree down and sell it to be used to make mango wood furniture and other products.

Sustainable Forests

One of the most important factors when choosing an environmentally friendly wood is to ensure that it comes from a sustainable forest.

On average in sustainably managed farms each mango tree is replaced every seven to fifteen years, making it one of the most sustainable types of wood to choose.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent body which offers international certification to forest owners to ensure that the wood being grown is sustainably managed. Forest owners can use the FSC certification to prove to consumers that their wood is produced responsibly.

Most bamboo is now grown in carefully managed forests and governments ensure that most growers get a fair deal for the wood they have grown meaning that those who are dealing with the wood at its source are not being exploited.

Reclaimed Wood

Many people are now choosing to use reclaimed wood and the use of wood from sources such as disused structures, railways and even old wine barrels has become much more popular in recent years.

Although sourcing reclaimed wood can be more difficult that buying new wood recycling old materials eradicates the environmental impact that cutting down trees for new wood has.

How to Revitalize Your Home with Modern Design

Sunday, November 20th, 2011

In designing any interior space, the key is to make sure the people using it will be comfortable, both physically and emotionally. Homeowners who prefer clean lines and uncluttered surfaces may find a contemporary modern style appealing. Most interiors lend themselves well to a modern treatment. The secret is simplicity: simple treatments of floors, walls and windows, simply styled modern furnitureand spartan simplicity in decorative elements. A clean, minimalist, modern look can easily transform a dated room into an exciting living environment.

Contemporary Furnishings

Updating a room in a modern style requires a light hand with furniture. The overall look of a contemporary interior is clean and spare, with plenty of open space. Modern furniture should not be so large as to crowd the space, nor should it be so small as to generate clutter. The lines of the piece should be simple, and devoid of complex details that would detract from the overall effect. Colors should be predominately neutral with a strong emphasis on white, although dark or bright contrast pieces can also be effective. Surfaces ought to have textural interest, whether flat expanses of hard gloss like an enameled coffee table or areas of soft plush like suede upholstery.

Modern interiors often incorporate nature, either as a view through a window or as interior detail. Plants, preferably living ones (not plastic), can provide both a natural touch, a bright swath of green color and a textural contrast either bold or feathery. Best of all, they help keep interior air fresh and clean. The one thing to watch when selecting plants, however, is their size; plants in contemporary interiors must be large enough to make an impression and avoid a cluttered appearance, but small enough not to crowd the room. Bold plants like cacti, succulents or ficus species are particularly appropriate. Aquariums may also work in some rooms, either with a single showy fish in a tank just large enough to keep it healthy or a large tank with its own interior decorated in a contemporary minimalist style.

The arrangement of furniture in a modern interior can be as important as its selection. The overall impression should always be open. Even the large platform beds so dear to modern designers must be used with care to preserve a roomy look. In living areas, furniture can be arranged around the perimeter, leaving an open central area for an inviting atmosphere and a practical path for traffic. Dining areas in the modern style might feature a minimalist approach with only the most necessary furnishings in simple geometric shapes in a space flooded with natural light.

Surface Treatments

One important facet of any interior design scheme is the floor/surface itself. In a modern room, floor color is normally white; white walls, white ceilings and white floors (where practical) make a fine canvas for the best modern looks. Variations in texture can keep the feel of the room from becoming too stark. Plush fabric, sheepskin rugs and filmy curtains contrast with the flat expanse of white walls to create a fresh, uncluttered look that is welcoming as well as clean and open. If the homeowner is uncomfortable with white, another light neutral color can be used to good effect, such as milder cream tones.

Another background element in the most characteristically modern rooms is natural light. If the structure itself is modern in style, it should have huge expanses of glass windows to let light pour in, including skylights. Where privacy considerations permit, these can be left totally unadorned to admit both light and a view, whether intimate or expansive. Large mirrored surfaces will help the light to flow through the space. Those windows that must be covered present a choice between a glowing effect created by light-penetrating translucent draperies, or an interesting textural addition to the overall effect.

Floors present practical problems in a modern interior, as white floors can be quite difficult to keep clean, being that even a hint of grime can spoil the effect. So, many designers use polished wood floors in a relatively light color. Others go for dark colors of wood or tile for contrast. If the area is lightly used, like a guest room, or frequently cleaned, like a bathroom or kitchen, a white floor may be quite practical. Floors present another opportunity for textural contrast: a luxuriously deep rug or an area of carpeting can provide a visual separation between two areas of a room, or they can be used strictly for visual and tactile interest.

Details

The bane of contemporary design is clutter. Decorative accessories should be few in number, and items like afghans, books, and magazines – and even remote controls – should be kept out of sight in drawers, cabinets, trunks and ottomans that harmonize with the modern style of the room. A large television may remain in view if its presence suits the homeowner’s lifestyle, but DVD players and game systems and the discs that feed them are best concealed in a discreet cabinet when not in use. Televisions require wiring, and a unit that does not sit on a stand able to conceal them should have some other way of hiding the obvious. One option is to run the wires through the walls, but the possibility of a fire hazard means an electrician should be employed to install them. Another idea is a cord cover, which is a small rectangular channel that runs along the surface of the wall to conceal the wiring. When painted to match the wall, the cover is so unobtrusive as to be almost invisible.

Even a minimalist room will have some decoration, but it is important to keep it in harmony with the overall style of the room. Artwork should be evenly distributed enough to avoid a cluttered look, and possibly big enough to be the focal point of the room. Colors may be neutral or bright, and the subject matter and style should be as modern as the room itself; timeless Picasso pieces would do as well in a modern interior design scheme as newer paintings from the 21st century would. Architectural drawings or black and white photographs work as well, and in some rooms the bright colors of pop art can fit quite nicely. Ultimately, which artistic accents you add to your home will depend entirely upon your own personal tastes!

The Basics of French Provincial Decorating

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

french decor

The French provincial decorating style is a manifestation of the décor used in France’s provinces during the 17th and 18th century. Typically, people living in the provinces belonged to the lower classes and did not have too much money to spend on decorating their homes. So, they came up with a distinct style of their own which proved to be cost effective. The French provincial decorating style is based on the imperial designs used in courts and homes of the rich and wealthy. The only difference is that it doesn’t cost as much. Exempting expensive textiles, embroidery, costly furniture and a collection of gold items, the French provincial style does not lack in charm or appeal in any way. Here are the basics of this beautiful decoration style.

Furniture

Armoires are a staple of French provincial decoration. Back in the day, closets encompassed whole rooms and the tax laws stated that each household shall be taxed according to the number of rooms. Those who couldn’t afford to have closets chose wardrobes or armoires, as they are known. Armoires are carved cabinets used for storing things. With high quality metal work, armoires are flexible and can be used in every room in the house. Without armoires, a French provincial theme will be incomplete.

Wall Adornments

Like armoires for furnishing, the wall adornments used are also inexpensive. Generally, mirrors are hung on walls. Mirrors reflecting the light around the room are a trademark of French provincial decoration. You can get ornate and carved mirrors that have beautiful art work done on the frame. They will enhance the look and feel of your room substantially. You can choose between large and small mirrors but larger mirrors are preferable. Also, photographs in ornamental frames can add to the grandeur and feel.

Fabrics

Embroidery is widespread in French provincial decoration. Embroidery was a skill taught to each and every female during that time, which is why they were able to weave beautiful and intricate patterns. To reflect a poignant French provincial theme, you have to go for fabrics with heavy embroidery. All the pillows, curtains, drapes, bed sheets and linens you use should be embroidered. Along with embroidery, you can use fabrics with lace work, which were also common during the 17th and 18th century.

Colors

The colors used in French provincial decoration are inspired by the French countryside. Since the provincials didn’t have much money to buy colorful items from across the continent, they adapted what they could see around them. There are a variety of colors that you can use in your interior décor, such as cornflower blue, brick red, deep brown and sage green. Also, the colors of the French national flag, red, white and blue are found abundantly in French provincial decoration.

These are some of the basics of French provincial decorating. There is room for improvisation and improvement in this décor style and you can change it according to your preference. Make sure you keep the basics in mind while selecting all the elements of a great French provincial theme.

Furniture Arrangement for Beginners

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Without a doubt, the arrangement of your home’s furniture can be a make or break portion of the overall look and feel you are aiming for. Even if you have found the perfect pieces of furniture, catchy accessories, and gorgeous wall colors, a poorly organized furniture scheme can ruin an entire room. Whether you are a new home owner or are simply hoping to rearrange your existing furniture, there are several guidelines to follow which should help you in creating the most effective and pleasing arrangement.

Although it seems obvious, it bears mentioning that you must first and foremost consider the physical properties of your room. Where are the doors? Do they open inward or outward? Are the windows high enough that furniture can be placed under them? Which walls have the most space to accommodate furniture? These are just a few of the questions you should ask yourself before you start arranging your furniture.

Arranging your Living Room Furniture

More often than not, it is a good idea to consider your largest piece of furniture as the focal point of your arrangement. Therefore, in the living room, it is recommended that you start with the sofa and work off of that. It’s best to place the sofa against the wall with the most surface area, for two reasons. First, the largest wall obviously has the most space to accommodate the sofa. Second, placing the sofa on a large wall can help make the wall look smaller and add continuity to the room.

Once you have found the best place for your sofa, you can move on to other seating items. At this point, it is important to consider the traffic patterns of the room. If the room connects to two others, consider the path which you would walk in order to pass through. You want to keep traffic lanes open and as natural as possible. For a point of reference, most doorways are approximately three feet wide. This is a good standard for the width of your traffic lanes, but you can make them a bit wider if you like.

Arranging your Bedroom Furniture

In the bedroom, your bed is the major point of focus and requires careful consideration. The most visually appealing place for a bed is in a centralized part of the room. Again, if this can be done by placing it against the largest wall, then you should certainly consider it. Many people adhere to a rule of thumb that the bed should not be in the path of the doorway. For some, this creates a somewhat cumbersome look. Of course, there is also the possibility that you may want to be in bed (and out of sight) with the door open.

As you are considering your furniture arrangement, always think about the purpose of the room and what the object of focus is. Family rooms typically revolve around fireplaces or the television, so keep these aspects in mind when planning your design. The best arrangement is the one that makes you and your family feel most comfortable and doesn’t interfere with the natural flow of traffic in your home.
