More Like the MOMA than Your Bathroom

Oh the joys of remodeling! We all seem to want to spice up our home from time to time, but much of the time we fall prey to the conformed look. Let’s all get glossy countertops, new cabinets, a big, stylish mirror, and have a technically sound, yet roomy and luxurious shower/tub. Yes, this is what we want, but where is there room for imagination and creativity? Sure, you can pick color schemes and plant arrangements, but will sparks fly, or will it become stagnant? Interior designers Greg De Meza, Jennifer Gustafson and Michelle Nelson put together a gorgeous, mosaic laden bathroom design for the San Francisco Decorator Showcase. From the floors to the walls to, finally, the shower surround the black and white, pixelated look created a fun, energetic atmosphere that was as active as it was well-crafted.

The small black mosaic tiles begin in a scarce pattern near the entryway, slowing becoming more and more present, filling the gaps amongst the sea of white. A culmination of artistic expression can be found in the shower, where the black tiles have finally taken over, laying down a nice backdrop for the white, mosaic words “wash behind your ears”. It may appear startling at first, but the subtle progression from door to shower truly does build excitement in an otherwise unremarkable space.

Incorporating words, phrases, and pictures within a bathroom or kitchen mosaic may seem a bit foreign to some, as plain tiles, wallpapers, and paint are undeniably more prevalent. Bringing your wall design out from the background and making it the showpiece creates an entirely different environment. For some, the lighting and vanity are the real keys to a bathroom re-design, but thinking outside the box and allowing the eye focus on one consistent design from the floor to the ceiling is one way to create functional, interactive art in your own home.
