Saving energy is not only an excellent way to help the environment, but it’s also a great way to save money on monthly household bills. The following are a few handy tips on how to save energy, while reducing your monthly costs:

Appliances:
To keep utility bills low and save on energy, shop for Energy Star appliances. Clean the dryer’s lint filter on a regular basis. If you have any unused electrical equipment unplug it when not in use. When washing clothes, switch to cold water to save money and energy since 90% of the energy is wasted on heating the water. When using your computer, switch to a laptop over a desktop computer for additional savings.

Furnace:
Keep your furnace clean and properly maintained annually. Change the filter every 1-2 months as a dirty filter will reduce the airflow forcing the furnace to run longer and will run up your monthly gas bill. If you’re in need of a new furnace, consider purchasing an Energy Star as they can save a home an average of over $500 annually in natural gas and electrical costs.

Natural Gas and Electric Payment Options:
Talk to your gas and electric companies and sign up for special monthly payment options. This doles out your heating and electrical bills into equal payments each month to avoid exorbitant costs during the peak months.

Thermostat Control:
Install a programmable thermostat to control your heating and cooling temperatures when you’re not home or asleep. By setting your thermostat down a degree or two allows the homeowner to save over $60.00 a year.

Sealing and Insulation:
Inspect leaks or cracks that lead outside of the home such as windows, fixtures, doors, baseboards and plumbing and seal with caulk or weather stripping. To ensure your home is protected from any heat that may escape, make sure you have an excellent insulation base. During the winter months, close the blinds and draperies around the window area to keep the heat in. Take advantage of homes with a sunny exposure and open window coverings to allow the sun to heat your house for no cost. Use room ceiling fans to help distribute air circulation throughout your home.

Conserve Water:
Conserve water at home by changing up your showerheads and faucets that promote a lower flowing motion of water. When bathing save energy by taking a quick shower instead of wasting water by filling up the bathtub with hot water for a bath. Make sure the dishwasher and washing machine are full before running them. Inspect faucets, toilets and showerheads for any leaks and repair if necessary.

Lighting:
Another good way to conserve is to use less energy to light up your home. Replace ordinary light bulbs with energy saving ones. When you or your family are not in a certain room or area of the house, learn to turn off lights or use dimmer switches to keep the lighting low. Use timers or dimmers to keep lighting low. Change any outdoor lighting around the house and garage with motion sensory lighting instead.

Some home improvements may seem like a great idea initially, until you find out that they are not all that practical. There are primarily two types of home improvements that can be considered, those that save you money while you continue to live in the home and those that help you sell your home faster.

Home Improvement that Save Money

Windows and doors
When you are searching for cost-effective methods of home improvement, windows and doors are always a good place to start. Whether you plan to stay in your home or you plan to sell your home, windows and doors are always a great option. Not only can you save hundreds of dollars a year in home heating and cooling costs, but upgrading your doors and windows make a great selling feature.

Energy audits help
Do it yourself energy audits can help you identify low-cost methods for improving your home. Simple things like upgrading your heating system, changing light bulbs and adding insulation to your home can save hundreds of dollars a year. In addition, taking the time to conduct an energy audit can help identify problem areas that could be improved if you plan to sell your home.

Kitchen upgrades
There are several minor kitchen upgrades that will pay for themselves in a relatively short period of time. For example, upgrading counter tops, adding additional storage space or a simple coat of paint are all cost effective kitchen upgrades that make your kitchen more practical and serve as a great selling feature.

Outdoor features
Changing the outside of your home can have a great impact on the value of the home. Whether you are planning to stay in your home or planning to sell your home, siding is an option that may be considered. Not only is siding practical from an energy savings standpoint, but if you are planning to sell your home it can help add curb appeal.

When you are considering upgrades to your home, it is best to avoid things like upgrading a home office, over-sizing of master bedrooms and other upgrades that won’t pay for themselves. Home upgrades can be disruptive and they can be costly if they are not well planned. Whether you are searching for effective home improvements to save money when you plan to stay in your home or you are searching for ways to make your home more marketable you’ll need a plan. It is never a good idea to upgrade just for the sake of upgrading, you want improvements that are practical, cost effective and will pay you back over time. Upgrades that are a waste of money do little to help salability or livability.

It’s January and if you’re like most people you’re kicking yourself for putting off weatherproofing your home for the winter months. Freezing temperatures and snow are here (or on the horizon if you’re one of the lucky ones who haven’t yet received a blast of winter). There is still time to winterize your home and enjoy peace of mind knowing you’re ready for old man winter and whatever he may throw at you.

1. Inspect the Furnace:

Give the furnace a tune up (either by you or a professional) to ensure it’s clean and working efficiently. To keep it running smoothly, change the filters every month when the furnace is being used. Dirty filters cause the furnace to work harder which wastes energy and it also costs you more money to heat your home.

2. Clean those Gutters:

Clean out the leaves and other debris from your gutters. Clogged gutters can cause leaks, ice jams or water back up which can damage the roof, siding, or trim.

Image Via

3. Seal leaks around Doors and Windows:

Examine the interior and exterior doors and windows and pay close attention to their joints. Look for ice building up on the window, and air leaks or gaps between the windows, door frames and the siding. If the gap is larger than the width of a nickel, the gap will need to be sealed. Seal the exterior side of the windows using Silicone caulk (it’s resistant to the elements). For the inside, you can purchase a window insulator kit from your local hardware store and install it yourself. For doors, add weather stripping as needed.

4. Stop Pipes From Freezing:

Pipes located in your attic, crawl spaces, basement, or near outer walls are vulnerable to freezing in cold temperatures. Insulate the pipes in these areas to prevent the pipes from freezing. You can also keep cabinet doors open to allow the warm air in to keep the pipes warm in the kitchen and bathroom. If your home doesn’t have frost free faucets outside then shut off the water to them prevent the pipes from bursting.

Image Via

5. Insulate the Attic:

Keep the heat in your home and not outside by ensuring there is enough insulation in the attic. Without enough insulation, the heat will rise and leave your home causing the furnace to work harder to keep your house warm.

6. Close off Vents:

Turn off any vents you have to attic, storage areas or any areas of the home you don’t use during the winter months. You should also regularly vacuum your vents to keep them clear of dust, debris and children’s toys.

7. Make Sure Detectors and Humidifiers Work:

If you don’t already have a carbon monoxide detector then purchase one from your local hardware store. Furnaces and fireplaces give off carbon monoxide, a lethal, colorless and odorless gas. Furnaces and fireplaces that are not properly inspected can leak this gas into your home. If you already have a carbon monoxide detector, install fresh batteries. For the smoke detectors test, inspect and install new batteries. Clean your humidifier at least two to three times during the winter.

The above tips and suggestions which most of it you can do yourself, will help save you money this winter. It will help lower your utility bill, protect your home from unnecessary winter disasters and more importantly, give you peace of mind and allow you to join your favorite winter activities.

The gallery customer picked up the jewelry box, turning it in her hands.

“So, you’ll inlay any Lapis Lazuli initials in the oak?”

“Well”, I said, ”I’ll paint it in faux Lapis.”

She had bit of a distant look on her face.

“So the price is for faux Lapis?” –running her fingers over the design on the box– “How much to do it like this?”

“I’ll be doing it just like that, in any initials you choose.”

The distance turned to confusion. Fostering my own confused look, it started to dawn on me that we had a communication problem.

“But I want real Lapis, like this.”

This is the ultimate compliment for the Trompe L’Oeil (French for ‘to fool the eye’) artist. Absolute conviction that your work is “real,” not painted.

Long story short, I managed to clarify that the entire surface was faux paint: The Lapis Lazuli and the Oak.

Thankfully, I never really get used to this. It’s always a thrill.

Like the guy at the antique car show who kept finding ways to ask me how the “wood” dash board was finished.

“So…you painted the wood? Don’t you mean stained it? Did you carve it or did you have someone else do it?”

“It’s not carved? How did you shape the wood…?”

After a few minutes of this back and forth, I took a key out of my pocket and tapped it on the dash. It rang out like the early American Detroit steel that it is.

He turned a little red, grinned and yelled: “How the hell did you do that!?” He claimed to be an experienced woodworker.

It’s fascinating to me that people often react more strongly to convincing Trompe L’Oeil work than they do to the real thing. Like the jewelry box customer whose attitude went from a blasé “this lapis” to “Oh my God! It’s paint!”

It’s a kind of magic and (sappy or not) the power of magic is enduring because it gives people a wonderful combination of hope and surprise.

My interior projects typically go through a similar process. The customer comes home from work to freshly installed faux crown molding, flooring inlay or wood grained cabinet doors. The reactions vary, but not much.

One lady started crying. I don’t mean damp eyes; I’m saying she was sobbing. And smiling. I assured her everything would be okay and should we proceed with that fireplace mantel she’d mentioned.

But that’s only the jumping off point. The real fun begins when they get to mess with friends and family: “Well, yes Walnut is very expensive but I just had to have it for these French doors (giggle).”

Eventually they share the truth (or not) and in this way, for as long as they’re in the home, own the car…, they get to be the magician.

Thanks to advancements in painting techniques and materials, you can make amazing painted wood grain part of your interior design project and no one will be the wiser. But please, after they’re sufficiently impressed, let them in on the secret.

Winter is well and truly here and what we all want most is a lovely warm home where we can be protected from the elements. In fact, a cold and draughty home just makes winter seem even harder. However there are lots of ways that you can keep your home warmer in winter using insulating techniques. Here are the top five home insulation techniques:

Windows

Did you know that the average home can lose more than twenty percent of its heat through badly insulated windows? That’s why double or even triple glazing is so important in terms of keeping your home warm. Although it can be costly, when you consider all the money you will be saving in terms of fuel bills it does seem worthwhile. Not to mention the fact that your home will be much more pleasant to live in. Check out this post from Apartment Therapy for window insulation tips.

Doors

A draughty door is not only incredibly irritating, it’s also a sure fire way to lose tons of heat from your home. Although it’s easy to see gaps between doors and door frames, if there are no gaps then it can be difficult to determine if there is a draught. One way to check is to hold some light material like a feather or piece of toilet roll up to the seams in your door. If there is a draught you will see the feather or loo roll moving.

Gaps at the bottom of doors can be remedied with a draught excluder whilst gaps between the door frame and wall can be filled in with caulk. Your front door needs to be very well insulated to protect your home from the elements and uPVC doors are incredibly effective in terms of insulation.

Loft

Loft lagging has been used as a form of insulation in homes for many years, but older homes may not have sufficient lagging as in the past less insulation was used than would be used in a modern build. Loft insulation should be at least six inches thick so if yours is less than this then it will need to be replaced.

Water Tank

An uninsulated water tank can cost you a lot of money because it will take more energy to heat your water and to keep it hot. You can buy specially designed jackets that can be placed over water tanks to help keep the water hot. In general hot water pipes don’t need insulating unless they run outside or run along a cold outside wall. However, if your water travels a long way between your tank and bathroom or kitchen then it can be worthwhile to insulate your pipes too.

Wall Cavities

Most homes are built with wall cavities that are filled with insulation during the building process. However, older homes may not have sufficient insulation or the insulation that was there may have deteriorated. It is possible to improve wall cavity insulation by drilling holes in the walls and filling them by blowing in materials like beads, plastic foam or mineral wool. However, this can be an expensive and laborious task so a cheaper alternative is to cover walls with cork or vinyl. Alternatively you can cover your walls in a thin layer of polystyrene before you decorate.

Good insulation will make your fuel bills cheaper and make your home warmer, so follow these simple tips to make sure that your home is warmer this winter.

In the 1990’s we all experienced the rise of the furniture warehouse store and many of us fell prey to the charms of what seemed like incredibly cheap furniture.

However, what a lot of the furniture gained in price it lost in quality and now more and more people are turning back to purchasing high quality, well made furniture.

One of the reasons why this is happening is because everyone is more aware of issues such as the damage that the production of cheap furniture causes to the environment and the need to take materials like wood from sustainable sources.

So what types of wood are the most sustainable and the most environmentally friendly to use?

Fast Growing Wood

Birch trees can reach maturity up to twice as fast as oak. As you can harvest birch more often than oak you can get twice as much material for use as flooring from it in within the same timeframe.

Cherry trees also grow fairly fast but the red hue of the wood tends to fall in and out of fashion which makes it a less popular choice.

Bamboo has been considered one of the most environmentally friendly woods to use for the last decade because it grows very fast and if treated correctly is very durable and long lasting.

One wood which has become more popular in recent years is mango. Mango trees can bear fruit for several decades, but once a tree grows higher than eighty feet it becomes difficult to harvest. At that point mango farmers can cut the tree down and sell it to be used to make mango wood furniture and other products.

Sustainable Forests

One of the most important factors when choosing an environmentally friendly wood is to ensure that it comes from a sustainable forest.

On average in sustainably managed farms each mango tree is replaced every seven to fifteen years, making it one of the most sustainable types of wood to choose.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an independent body which offers international certification to forest owners to ensure that the wood being grown is sustainably managed. Forest owners can use the FSC certification to prove to consumers that their wood is produced responsibly.

Most bamboo is now grown in carefully managed forests and governments ensure that most growers get a fair deal for the wood they have grown meaning that those who are dealing with the wood at its source are not being exploited.

Reclaimed Wood

Many people are now choosing to use reclaimed wood and the use of wood from sources such as disused structures, railways and even old wine barrels has become much more popular in recent years.

Although sourcing reclaimed wood can be more difficult that buying new wood recycling old materials eradicates the environmental impact that cutting down trees for new wood has.

Making your home energy efficient is one of the best things that you can do for the environment as well as your wallet. One of the first steps in making your home energy efficient is sealing any holes or cracks. This is a huge part of creating an energy efficient dwelling since there are so many places where warm air can escape and cold air can get in.

It’s also the basis for making your other energy saving attempts work their best. You need to look for cracks and other openings both inside and outside your home.

Leave no space unattended, this means the spaces around the doors and windows as well as the floors and ceilings. Properly sealing your home can save up to 10 percent on you total annual energy bill. And, who wouldn’t want to save that much?

Start by looking or feeling around the house for leaks. Anywhere that is noticeably colder or where you can feel a draft needs to be sealed. Caulking, sealing with sprayfoam and using weather stripping are a few simple and inexpensive ways to stop drafts.

After you’ve finished sealing any leaks, you need to make sure that your home is well insulated. A well insulated home stays cool and comfortable in the summer and warm and cozy in the winter. Different R-values which indicate insulation’s ability to resist heat flow are recommended for different areas of the home.

For example, it’s usually recommended that R-38 is used in the attic. This means that the insulation is around 12-15 inches thick. The attic is also the easiest place to start since you won’t have to tear anything up. Just lying insulation in the floor rafters is sufficient. The attic is also the place where the most energy is wasted and where you’ll cut down on your energy bill the most.

Another great way to make you home more energy efficient is to seal your ducts properly. Ducts are installed in homes with forced air heating and up to 20 percent of air moving through the ducts can be lost due to badly sealed connections.

Heating and cooling effectively is another way to make your home more energy efficient. Half of the energy used in your home may go toward heating and cooling, so this is definitely something to pay attention to.
A simple way to cut down on costs and make your home more efficient is to keep up on air filter maintenance.

Changing an air filter each time it gets dirty will save a lot of energy because the effectiveness of your home’s system is impeded by old filters.
Maintaining a clean filter will allow your system to function properly and will extend its life.

Another step you can take to save energy and money is to install a programmable thermostat. Using it according to the instructions can save you up to $180 every year. Follow these simple steps and you’ll end up saving a good deal of energy as well as money.

Solar energy, heat and light from the sun, is one source of energy that humans have been using since the beginning of time. The evolvement of technology has resulted in different ways of harnessing solar energy. The most popular way of doing so is to utilize solar panels. A solar panel is an interconnected congregation of photovoltaic or solar cells that can be used to capture energy from the sun to be used as electricity. Since one solar panel produces limited power, you will need to install several panels to really be able to utilize solar energy. The more panels you install the more solar energy you will be able to harness.

In today’s society where our bills are getting higher and higher it is vital that we find ways to maximize our natural resources. One way to do so is by installing solar panels. Here are some of the benefits of using solar panels.

Save on electricity. By installing solar panels you will get to save on electricity. Even if you do not amass enough sunlight to cover for all your electric needs you can still collect enough to considerably decrease what you use. The more solar panels you install the more energy it can gather.

Environment friendly. Using solar panels will not only help you save on electricity, it can benefit the environment as well. There are many ways to create energy. And one way is by burning fuel. The disadvantage here is that fuel emits a by-product that is harmful to the environment. You would be doing mother earth a favor by using alternative energy sources such as solar energy.

One time installation – a lifetime of savings. Unlike electricity where you regularly have to pay the bills, you only need to spend once with solar energy. Solar panels do not come cheap. But you only have to buy them once. The moment they are installed you can enjoy “free” energy for as long as you want.

Sets a good example. By using natural energy like sunlight you will set a good example to others. People today are slowly feeling the wrath of Mother Nature. There are climate changes happening all over the globe. There are earthquakes, tsunamis and floods occurring in different countries. At least in a small way we are helping save Mother Earth. In this way we can show other people that we can help save nature where we are.

There are many ways to generate energy. And one way to do so is by harnessing what is naturally there. Why spend a fortune on electrical bills when we can use solar panels at home and save a lot of money? In the end it’s not only about being frugal. It is also about helping our environment.
